Why your blog sucks! And 10 tips to fix it...

Obviously your blog sucks, otherwise you wouldn't be reading this. Right? Or do you like to think you have a good blog and are afraid that others think it might suck -even though they tell you otherwise?

Just to be nice perhaps?
If you know a hot chick with a crappy blog, would you tell her? I know I wouldn't. I would give her two thumbs up even if it's the worst blog I've seen in my life!

Anyway, we're all here under the assumption that you have a 'good friend' who has a problem; his blog sucks! Well, this is what you can tell him;

#1 WRITING IS AWFUL

That's right. His writing style is probably boring, uninteresting and filled with spelling and grammatical errors. Not to mention, the sentence structure is all of the place. Most visitors click the 'x' after reading halfway through the first paragraph.

#2 BLOG DESIGN IS ATROCIOUS

And by atrocious you mean of course that you have seen the exact same layout many times before. Customize it a bit to give your blog a unique look.

#3 BLOG LOADS SLOW

One of the most irritating things on the internet is loading. It's a waste of your precious time. And only if it's something that's worth the wait- like a high res 4000x3000 picture of a hot chick. Then I'm willing to give up some of my time. Otherwise keep your blog fast, limit the amount of pictures and especially widgets.

#4 MAKE THE COMMENT SYSTEM EASY

I don't remember how many times I've been on blogs that I wanted to leave a comment on and in order to do so I had to give out my bloodtype, newborn, left leg.....and after all that I had to make sure I wrote the captcha correctly- and I better made sure I did it right, because if I didn't- I had to start all over again.
MAKE IT EASY PEOPLE - * name, * website * comment, that's it!

#5  LAYOUT IS HORRIBLE

Tell him that his layout doesn't make his blog really appealing to readers. The font is too small and hard to read and he uses a red background with blue letters. (seen something like it all to often).

#6 TOO CLUTTERED

There is Advertisements, writing, widgets and pictures everywhere! All distract from the main articles and readers find it hard to focus on the article that they were looking for. Get rid of distractions and clean up your blog.

#7 OUTDATED

The last reason why his blog sucks is because his last update was from February 9th, 2007. I've done many blog reviews for people where this was a big 'really'? You seriously wonder what is wrong with your blog if your last post dates from a few years ago? Readers want fresh content.

#8 THERE IS NO WAY TO SHARE

He writes great articles and content for the blog, but there is no way for a visitor to share that content with his or her friends/followers on facebook or twitter or any other way they prefer to share. Always make sure there is an option to share the post or the entire website on your blog.

#9 HAS BLACK HAT SEO

Your friend thinks he's smart by using black hat SEO techniques so he can get a ton of hits for his blog? Like writing hundreds of keywords in black writing on a black background so they appear 'invisible'. Wrong! Not only you devalue your own blog- you need to trick people to visit your blog because you can't generate traffic otherwise? - but also you're risk getting demoted (or banned!) in the search engines.

#10 SOURCE CODE HAS ERRORS

The HTML data (under the hood) is cluttered with errors. From blank <title> and <keyword> tags to missing <meta> tags. Or opened tags with no valid end tags (such as the <center> tag and unnecessary code that serves no purpose other that slowing the site down.

You tell him all that, and hopefully he'll take your advise. If he does - it means another 'rescued blog' on the internet.  :)

Make it easy to share your blog!

You don't know how many times I have seen blogs on the internet that have no sharing option available whatsoever. Although share buttons are relatively common in most browsers (like the addthis plugin for chrome or firefox) most people that visit your blog forget to share your content on social media or social bookmarking websites if there is simply not a way to share it easily. I emphasize here on EASY. A hard to find 'share this' buttons at the very bottom of the screen won't do you any good. Share buttons should be available everywhere on your website and clearly visible. Each individual post should be share-able at least. For instance on my blog sites I installed the 'wibiya bar' that allows users to share even all the pictures if they want to any type of social media or bookmarking site. Of course there are tons of other options, plugins and widgets that can help you make it easier to share your blog. Making it easy to share your blog is a must. It's something that each and every blog should have. It's almost as important as having a unique picture in every post you write.
One little share button can snowball into heavy traffic. If your blog is good enough to share - people will do it, and it takes only one of them to trigger a whole following, not to mention - in some cases you even create a backlink to your site.

! Did you know that the most common way of sharing is e-mail? So make sure you always have an email icon option available on your blog.

Use high quality SEO / LSI articles to boost your online presence.

Over the past year or so, high quality SEO (Search Engine Optimized) article writing has increased tremendously in popularity. This is mainly because of the recent Google Panda update which was released in February of last year. It set higher standards on the internet regarding fetching relevant content. No one besides Google really knows how Google's algorithm works but in simple terms, it lowers 'low quality websites' and ranks 'high quality websites' higher.

It was Google's answer to massive amounts of trash written content that was cluttering the internet thus the relevant search results. Since Google is the leader in its industry other search engines such as Bing and Yahoo soon followed to keep up with the big giant and also offer more relevant search results on their pages to keep not only their visitors happy, but also their advertisers.
Basically the algorithmic change implies that search engines are now stricter and smarter to 'see' which content is more relevant to show on the well fought over SERP (Search Engine Result Page). Simply having a website up and hoping you get some visitors is not good enough. You will have to promote your website - and the best way to do this is to create great high quality content that has the right amount of keywords and still sounds 'natural' (LSI - Latent Semantic Indexing). I'll devote a whole other blog post to LSI writing, but for now you just have to know that LSI is 'just making it sound naturally', so saturating your article with SEO keywords will do your target site more harm than good (also called Black Hat SEO), you will either get black listed by major search engines or see a major drop in your PR (Page Rank).

Now how does an high quality SEO article help your target website? Good question. This is how it basically works.

Let's say you have a pizza parlor in San Francisco. The competition is fierce and is all around you. Most of them have a website offering all the special deals etc. You have a website as well but there's hardly any traffic on it. Every time you type in your name in Google you don't even show up on the first result page. How do you fix this? How do you get your page to show up at least in the top 10 search results (the SERP). You do this by creating content, high quality SEO article content.

An article that contains keywords that are relevant to your business. In this example think about what your keywords would be for the pizza business. The more relevant key words you use the better it is; because

"pizza San Francisco" (2 keywords; is saturated with results and is hard to become on the fist SERP.
in fact 360,000 results were found when I typed it in Google just now.

If you use more keywords you narrow the results, meaning you have to deal with less competition. Narrowing results is also good because you target a specific group of people or area. Especially in a big city. Narrow it down to the district or area you serve and think of those keywords. like;

"North Beach Pizza San Francisco" already cuts the "pizza San Francisco" search results in more than half (113,000). People searching "North Beach Pizza San Francisco" obviously are in that area and are interested in ordering Pizza in North Beach San Francisco. Think about more like

"Chicago Style Pizza North Beach San Francisco" (which is actually 5 keywords - although San Francisco is two separate words - it's considered one key word, same goes for North Beach. Google robots are smart enough to 'understand' that North Beach San Francisco is related to an area in the city of San Francisco, not just any beach in the north.

Usually a high quality SEO article has about 4 to 5 keywords that are relevant to your business, product or service and are about 500 to 600 words in length. These articles can have a number of topics in them, as long as you use your keywords. So in our example you can talk about the founders of the pizza company, the fresh ingredients used in making the pizza, the way the pizza is baked (brick oven) etc etc. Within that article you mention "Chicago Style Pizza North Beach San Francisco" about 4 to 5 times.

Great! You have a fantastically written article, now what do you do with it? Another great question.

There are several ways to get your article out in cyberspace.

  • post it on your website blog
  • post it on another blog
  • post it on a forum
  • post it on a social media website (like hubpages, Squidoo etc)
  • post it on an article directory

Probably the last one is hands down the most effective way to promote your business online.

What is an article directory?
An article directory such as ezinearticles.com receive millions and millions of visitors each day(!) (Alexa rating 323 and Google Page Rank 6). There are hundreds of article directories out there and which one you choose all depends on the niche of your business.
This is how an article directory works; an article directory has usually a tremendous amount of readers. An article directory makes money with advertisements on their site (like Google adsense) that are shown around the user submitted articles. In return, you get massive exposure to your article, which has a link to your target website. Simple.

All submitted articles are reviewed manually in order to keep the content standards high. That's why it is so important to write a high quality SEO article that is unique and 100% copyscape passed. Copywhat? Yes, the battle for high quality content is so high that even rewrites are out of the question. Articles nowadays have to be:

  • unique
  • original
  • copyscape passed
  • free of spelling errors
  • free of grammatical errors
  • have a correct sentence structure
  • SEO and LSI in the proper places
Writing a high quality SEO article is not an easy task and can't be done by anyone. A lot of people are writing articles for a living now, but finding the right article writer for your business can be a very time consuming tedious task. Article writers know not everyone can write a high quality SEO article and charge a good amount of money for a 600 word article, sometimes up to even $30 an article.
